I'm still here!

I know my personal blog has suffered over the months.  But I have been keeping busy!  You can read about what I've been up to on my blog dedicated to my efforts to fundraise and train for the Rock n Roll half marathon in Las Vegas to benefit The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.  The race took place this past weekend, December 6th, and it is something I truly will never forget.

My "Mental Health" Weekend

This past month or so has been very difficult for me on many different levels.  It was frustrating not being able to keep up with my training program because of my hurt ankle, also not being able to play soccer due to the same reason; work has been VERY busy and often-times stressful, with MORE stress piling on knowing that I have to gear up for my only co-worker to be out of the office for 3 months when she has her baby in January (I am SO happy for her!!  ... just hate what it means for me); my feelings were hurt a couple of times by different people; I felt such pressure to train so I could hold up my side of the deal to those who have generously donated to my fundraiser, but was physically unable to perform how I wished or how I felt was expected; I felt very lonely at times and discouraged............................   These are just a few things that had been piling on over the weeks when I finally had a break-down.  And how cathartic that was when it was finally all over with!  I decided that I needed to take a day off of work.  It had been since May, so I felt like I was due.  I thought a "mental health day" would hopefully re-charge the positive side of my battery.  If only I could schedule a convenient time each week to emotionally let all my stress out.....  Then maybe things wouldn't seem like such a big deal from week to week.  But I guess that's just not how I work.  I just let it all build up until the smallest thing cracks my cement wall and everything comes POURING out.

So...  What better way to relieve my troubled feelings about everything than to make a trip up to visit my niece and nephews in WV?  There is nothing better.  So that's exactly what I did....

Friday after work I went to my personal training session at the gym.  I got my butt kicked!  My muscles have definitely become weaker since my Panama trip.  But I'm working on that now.  I came home afterward exhausted, but I had to move my couch to the other side of the room because I had a new couch coming Saturday morning!  Yoo hoo!  I also needed to move my big wardrobe as close to the window as possible to allow my new couch and recliner to fit along the wall next to it.  Here are before and after pics:

It took me an hour to move the wardrobe 5 inches.  That thing is SO heavy!  And my muscles were weak after my training session & moving my couch to the other side of the room.  Look closely and you can see the carpet mark of where the wardrobe used to be.  That was the most frustrating thing to try to move.  1 hour.  5 inches.  Ridiculous.

After that was all done, I was able to shower and go to sleep...  But not for long!  I was up early and out the door to meet up with my CCFA Team at 7:30AM for our group run.  The weather was LESS than desirable!  You can read about the run here.  An experience to remember, to say the least.  :)  After my run, I had just enough time to drive home, shower and throw on some clothes before the knock on my door came from the couch delivery guys!  After they left, I spent about 10 minutes arranging my new furniture where I wanted it, then another 10 minutes sitting in each available spot and then it was off to WV!!!

I always love going to my sister's house.  I knew that a trip there was EXACTLY what I needed to boost my spirits.  I was able to be myself and get the unconditional love that I was craving this past month.  The kids were all so excited to see me, ready with smiles and hugs and cheers and snuggles.  I was just as excited to see them!  I LIVE for this!  And I must admit; I probably need the hugs more than they do.  All weekend I heard things like, "You're the best Emma EVER!" "I LIIIIIKE you!" "I love you the bestest" "I'm so glad you came! You haven't come to our house in a long time" "Do you get to stay forever?"  The hugs and love weren't only reserved for when I first arrived.  It was constant all weekend.  From ALL of them!  I was in heaven.

First item of business: witness Seth riding his bike!  He is only 4, but learned how to ride his bike without training wheels just last week.  He was SO excited to show me.  So even though it was cold and rainy, he got on his bike and took a few rides up and down the sidewalk.  He LOVES riding his bike!  It was so fun to watch him.  BABY rides a bike!  (I'm the only one that Seth allows to still call him 'baby'.  We had a serious talk about this -- how I know he's a big boy now, but I like to call him baby because I still want to snuggle him.  To my delight, he agreed.  Now whenever I walk in their front door, I say, "I need a BABY!  Where's BABY?!"  And Seth will come running in to my arms.  I LOVE this!)

I brought some fun things with me to do with the kids.  First, we made ghost cupcakes.  Hannah is such a great helper in the kitchen.  She loves to bake!  And I love that she loves to help me.  :)  We frosted the cupcakes, then let everybody decorate with sprinkles!

Cupcakes in order: Joseph, Me, Hannah, Todd (ha!) Seth.

I also brought sugar cookie mix with a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter.  Again, Hannah helped me make the cookies, frost them, then let each person decorate their own with sprinkles.  So much fun!

In addition to the ghost cupcakes and pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies, we had 3 kinds of "Monster Soda"; Candy Cane, Lemondrop Dead, and SpooKiwi.  Each person liked a different flavor the best.  I then convinced Julie and Steve to make the homemade ice cream flavor that I brought with me; Strawberry with marshmallow fluff mixed in.  Turned out yummy!

Monday was a great day.  The sun came out and it wasn't as cold out.  I got up around 9:15 or so, put on my shorts and tanktop and went out for my 5 mile run.  It was great!  THIS is the way to train -- when you have nothing else to focus on but getting your run in for the day.  You can pick the best time of day for you to go, run outside in the daylight, pound out those miles and feel happy and accomplished.

In the early evening, Julie and I took the kids to pick out pumpkins!  It was so fun to be excited with them and explore all the spooky surroundings.  I did this with them several years ago as well.

Spooky Bus!

Blast from the past:

All in all, a GREAT weekend.  The kids were sad to see me leave and frankly, so was I.  Thanks, Julie, for letting me stay!  I love my family.

Picture of the Day

............. because I can't seem to muster the energy for a 'real' post.

These were all taken at Julie's house in August.

The simplest things are sometimes the happiest of things.

Teeny tiny hummingbird.  I thought it was a big bee, but when I looked closer, I saw its wings and its long 'beak'...  Crazy!

Another view of the hummingbird

Such a pretty rose!

Seth and Joseph found a toad. At one point, the toad jumped out of Joseph's hand on to Seth's HEAD! We laughed and laughed. Unfortunately, I didn't capture that.

Notes of Endearment

Dear Car, Motorcycle, Bus, Van, Dump/Semi/Garbage/Pickup/Tow/Cement/Moving-Truck Drivers -
Each day as I wait for the bus to come pick me up and whisk me off to the Pentagon so I can then crowd with thousands of other people to get on the Metro to work, I wanted to let you know that your rubbernecks, hollers, honks and whistles REALLY make me feel like such a beautiful woman with self-worth.  Especially those who have multiple riders shoved in the front bench seat of the vehicle, each with the look of a kid getting their first taste of ice cream.  Do you really think your actions are compliments to me standing on the sidewalk?  Please do not be surprised if I give you the finger.

Dear Metro Rider -
This is not a Jeepney.  You cannot hang out the doorway.  So please, when you see that the train is packed, do not try to shove yourself and your overstuffed backpack/rolling suitcase/guitar in case/stroller with child in the doors.  You will have the doors close on you.  And they do not automatically retract.  You will be stuck.  The train will be stuck.  WE ALL will be stuck.  Please step off.  We will get mad at you.  The train operator will get mad at you.  Best to not even try.

Dear Metro Driver -
I understand that since the June 22 "incident", all trains are operated manually.  But this does not mean that you can drive with a lead foot on the gas OR the brake!  Having the trains operate manually is supposed to be MORE safe.  Please understand that when you start or stop abruptly, all people who are standing go flying.  It's hard enough to find an open space on the pole to hold on to - as not all people are 7 feet tall and can reach the bars overhead - without being jerked around and shoved in to other people while also holding on to your personal belongings.  Thank you for your consideration of driving smoothly.

Dear Metro Rider 2-
Yes, the metro train is crowded.  But please be more aware of how you are standing.  I do NOT want to have you spoon me while standing.  I do not want to feel your front-side pressed up against my back-side.  GROSS!  C'mon, people!!

Dear Metro Driver 2 -
Wow.  You really are having a bad day, aren't you?  Your constant yelling over the loudspeaker is giving you away.  I, too, wish people would quit trying to hurry and squeeze on to the train.  I know that there are 18 open doors that people can utilize.  You threaten at each stop that the train will break if the doors close on people/their personal items.  You are getting more and more angry at each stop.  And then it happens.  When you press the button (?) to quickly open and close the doors again, some dumb guy hurries and leaps on to the train.  And of course the doors close on him.  You LOSE it!  You tell everybody that that's it.  The train is broken.  Everybody must get off.  But I'm not buying it.  I think you're just pissed.  You hate your job.  And sure enough, after the thousands of people stream out of the cars of the train on to the platform with thousands of other people waiting for the next train, you take off.  Miraculously, the train works.  And we are stuck on the platform.  Thanks.  You made me miss my bus.  Now I hate you.

Dear Dumb Guy that quickly leapt on to the train -
Really?  REALLY?  Now thousands of people hate you.

Dear Middle-Eastern-ish Guy at the Harris Teeter -
As I wait for you to slowly scan and bag my groceries, putting all the wrong things together in the same bag, I am charmed by you.  I know you are flirting with me by flashing me your winning smile combined with intense eye contact, easy laughter, and periodic winks.  If only I could understand what you were saying...

Dear Target Guy -
Thanks for being so attentive!  Even though I told you I didn't need any help, you still hung around to double-check.  I could have lifted the vacuum box on to the lower-level of my cart, but I sure appreciate you doing it for me.  This doesn't make me an incapable female.  But it sure makes you a nice gentleman!

Males -
A little secret: I can open my own door, step in after you on to the elevator, stand while you sit on the metro, carry my own luggage, carry my bike up and down my stairs, pay for my own meal, and even pay for yours.  But when you offer to do all this for me in a way that doesn't make me feel guilty about it - not because you think I'm incapable, but because you are just being a nice, respectful person - I am surprised and appreciative.  This wins you big points.  HUGE.  I love the chivalry.  It makes me feel happy, boosts my spirits and endears you to me.

Dear bugs in my condo:

I'm gonna Huff and Puff and .......... probably collapse

Whew!  So much has been going on!  I jumped in full force this week on my half marathon training and boy am I feeling it!  I ran almost 16 miles from Tuesday to Saturday.  I also added in a 10-mile bike ride (complete with the most killer hill I've EVER climbed on a bike), soccer practice, and helping a friend move and unpack.  My mind has also been in non-stop fundraiser mode.  It's no wonder that I just want to collapse in to a deep and dreamless sleep.  After this week, 13 more weeks to go!  I'm actually excited to see what my progress is week to week.

I decided to commit to this challenge for a couple of reasons.  Namely, Tami and Matthew.  I hope they don't mind me sharing this next little bit.  You may have read on my donation site that about 10 years ago, both Tami and Matt were in the hospital at the same time.  For 3 months, in fact.  It was really hard for me during that time, as they were both very sick and I was constantly worried about them.  I was also going to school and had just started my first job.  My dad was at work during the day, then would go visit during the evenings, and my mom would split her time between the 2 hospitals (we had to get special permission/clearance to have Tami switch to the hospital that shared with the Childrens hospital -- I don't really remember how it all worked, but it still took a while) all day and night, and I was often-times a shuttle driver to and from the hospitals.  I spent a lot of time at the hospitals as well, visiting and sleeping over.  It was a very strange routine and a very quiet household when I was home.

At one point, Tami had a bad allergic reaction to some medication and it was very scary to watch.  I remember running out in to the nurse's station yelling for somebody to come in her room to help her.  I cried.  I was so frightened for her.  I also remember sleeping in the chair-bed right next Matthew's hospital bed and holding his hand through the night soon after he had surgery.  I wanted to visit them both often.  But sometimes it was hard.  One night I couldn't make myself go over there.  Just thinking about walking in the hospital doors and down the halls to the elevators, taking in the smells and sounds, was just too much for me.  I couldn't make myself do it.  And I have felt guilty about those feelings all these years.  I should have been more available to them.  I've never been hospitalized or stuck in a foreign room, sometimes with another sick person sharing a bathroom, or not able to get out of bed to walk around.  And this is what they both had to go through for SUCH a long time!  It doesn't seem so much of a burden for me to just go up and sit and visit with them.  I've just felt so bad about those feelings I had of not being able to make myself go sometimes.

And this is why when I got the flyer in the mail about CCFA's Team Challenge, I was SO excited to learn more and see what it was all about.  This is my way of finally making it up to Tami and Matt.  My way of giving back.  My way of saying I LOVE YOU and I'm so sorry for what you've had to go through.  It's such a little thing that I'm doing in comparison to what they've been through, but I hope that great results come from it.  I'm grateful that I am healthy enough to take on this challenge and am so happy for this excuse to keep Tami and Matt in my constant thoughts.  It's been a pretty emotional couple of weeks for me thinking about everything and going through all the preparations.  Each donation notification has brought tears to my eyes.  I am so grateful for such kind, giving people who would be so moved to help me on behalf of Tami & Matt and all other people suffering.

I assume this will be my life for the next 3 months, and I'm totally pumped!  Add to the mix my soccer games, and you'll have a good idea of what I'm up to.  I'll continue to update my CCFA blog so you can read more about my training and progress:  www.ccfa-mleblakemore.blogspot.com In fact, there's a new update now! My Big News!

I've been waiting for weeks now to talk about this!  I've been so excited to learn more so I could share with everyone.

I've decided to join the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America's Team Challenge Half Marathon!  This is a huge fundraising event that will raise money for the research of Crohn's and Colitis.  I will be running the Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon on December 6th with other Team Challenge members from across the nation.  I have chosen to take on this huge event on behalf of Tami and Matthew who both have Crohn's Disease, and I know that thinking of them will keep me motivated and positive throughout the next 15 weeks of training and fundraising.

I will publish a more detailed blog post later, but wanted to get this out.  Please visit my fundraising page at: http://www.active.com/donate/lv09dcvirginia/eblakemore as well as my dedicated blog to the event: http://www.ccfa-mleblakemore.blogspot.com.

Be excited!  I sure am.  And any donation would be MUCH appreciated!!

What’s the last thing you bought?
An ice cream maker

What are you listening to right now?
White Lies: Paolo Nutini

What do you think of the person that tagged you?
I really hate her.  She moved away from me.  She was my nutritional and physical motivator when we lived together.  She was also somebody I could count on to provide NO DRAMA whatsoever in our friendship.  But she selfishly left me behind to pursue her own goals.  I just can't understand it.
;)  Katie, you're awesome!!  I miss you!

If you could have a house, fully paid for, and totally furnished anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Well, seeing as I haven't visited all of the world, that's a tough decision.  I would love to be anywhere with mountains, trees, ocean, sunshine, roadbiking/running trails, a tennis court, soccer field, and fresh produce nearby.  I want to go to there.

If you could go anywhere for the next hour, where would it be?
The beach

What is one of your hobbies?
Hobbies makes me think of crafts.  I'm not crafty.  I guess I'll say my hobby is blogging.

What are 3 things that annoy you most?
1. Liars/Flaky people
2. People who complain about their current situation but take no action - nor try - to change it
3. My shortfalls

What is your favorite color?
Purple - always has been

What is your favorite piece of clothing in your wardrobe?
I don't have just one favorite.  But I love me some lounge pants and hoodies

What is your dream job?
Golly.  I don't know.  If I knew, I would probably pursue it.  Perhaps my dream (non-existent) job would be to get paid for doing all the activities I enjoy; Soccer, Biking, Tennis, Water Sports, Camping, lounging on the beach.....  I'm pretty content in the job I have now.

What are you going to do after this?
Pay attention to my work emails

What is your favorite fruit?
A fresh peach from our tree in the backyard of our CA house.  Will never have that again.  :(

What inspires you?
People who are dedicated to a cause.  People that know exactly what they're working towards who stay motivated to reach that goal.  Those that give selflessly.

Who was the last person you kissed?
I kissed my nephew on the cheek

What are you currently reading?
The Great Coverup: Nixon and the Scandal of Watergate

What delighted you most today?
It's only 10:30AM.  Have I been delighted yet?  Um....  I guess I'll say that it was Steve's animated Lego video he posted on YouTube

Describe your personal style.
I don't have a style.  I've always lacked style.  Anything that is 'in fashion' I can't seem to pull off.  I feel most comfortable in jeans, tshirt and flipflops.  And if it's chilly, I'll throw on a zip-up hoodie.  Is that a style?

By what criteria do you judge a person?
I try to determine if they are genuine and truthful.  If they really care about other people, or if their main motivator is to do whatever it takes to get what they want no matter who they trample in the process.

2+ Month Recap

Now that Panama is behind me, I need to catch up on what has happened SINCE! Lots of fun things for sure. This post will mostly be told by pictures because believe it or not, I'm tired of writing! :D

At the beginning of June, Todd came for a quick weekend visit to pick up Tami and Jer's truck that they left behind when they moved to Germany. One of the fun activities while he was here: DC United soccer game! It was a GREAT game, despite the rain! After the game, we ordered pizza and watched the NBA Finals at my place.

Friday night included a trip up to Julie & Steve's place, complete with grilling, ping pong, foosball, pinball, and of course Guitar Hero.

A couple of weeks later, my friends and I went to a huge BBQ in the National Harbor.  I was so excited to see a mechanical bull there!

National Harbor is where The Awakening statue was moved to. I believe this is a better home for him.

I also finished up my soccer season with The Once Mighty Growlers. At the first of the season, I was really disappointed with my performance. The second or third game I played, I scored an own goal. Embarrassing! The team captain was constantly yelling for me to do this or that (which I didn't get offended by - he was just making sure I knew what I was supposed to be doing). My mind remembered what I needed to do to play the game, but my body was not cooperating! I actually got to the point of dreading each game, and I vowed that I wouldn't sign up to play again. I was just too frustrated with myself. BUT! Toward the end, I actually started improving! I was excited to play and the team captain started yelling at the others to pass ME the ball! I also sustained my first soccer injury which I was proud of. I was competing for the ball and somebody's cleat went right to my knee. OUCH! It really hurt and I couldn't walk for several minutes. Turned out to be a pretty cool bruise, though! I was actually sad when the last game was played. I was eager and excited to keep going and playing. I believe there is a fall league. I'm definitely signing up. I hope I can continue to improve! I love the game.

My old roommate Katie came back to VA after being gone for about a year.  I sure do miss her!  She's great. We had fun going out to dinner, eating ice cream, grilling, and meeting up on my lunch break.  I miss my shredded wheat partner in crime!

My friend Kelly came out to visit me from UT at the end of June and was able to stay for 2 weeks!  It was really fun to have her here.  We went out to eat, went shopping, packed a picnic and watched the planes fly in to Reagan National Airport, saw the Washington Nationals play, watched the 4th of July fireworks together, and made a day trip to Gettysburg.  So fun to see and hang out with her again!  We certainly laughed a lot and had a good time.

GETTYSBURG

It started to really pour down rain at this point!

Since Kelly left, I've been hanging out with local friends, seeing movies, eating out, hanging by the pool, etc.  It's been a really great summer!  We've been lucky this year as it's mostly only been in the 80's - not the usual oppressive heat and humidity that this area is known for.  Thank goodness, as it's allowed me to enjoy the outdoors without being miserable.

I got a surprise last week from my other old roommate and awesome friend, Tasha!  She and her husband moved to Germany in February.  Well, on Monday I got a knock on the door and there she was!  It was awesome.  She's in town for some job training until mid-November!  So cool.  I'm SO excited to hang out with her over the next couple of months and then I get to see her again in December when I go to Germany!  Yippee!  Lots of great things to look forward to!
Check out my running and fundraising efforts that came to fruition December 2009 through my other blog: http://ccfa-mleblakemore.blogspot.com/
