Obligatory New Year Resolutions Post

Well, it's a new year.  Hanging up a new calendar brings a flurry of conflicting emotions for most.  There's depression that the holidays are over.  Stress over paying off the December credit card bill.  Feeling of doom returning to work.  And then there are the emotions of hope for a new beginning.  Excitement about making new goals and working toward them.  Happy that the previous year has come to an end.

While 2013 wasn't a particularly GREAT year for me, it wasn't so bad, either.  I'd say the scale tipped slightly to the favorable.  On the one side, I was terribly sick with the flu at the beginning of the year while attending my Grandma's funeral, and then I injured my knee that I have had to deal with all year, sidelining me from all the races I normally run.  I also didn't get to participate in any triathlons in 2013.  This was a drastic difference from 2012 in which I participated in a total of 20 races; 6 of them triathlons.  But on the other side, I made the decision to go back to school, minutely scrutinized my finances and made some changes, and I also started my own business.  Never mind the strengthening of friendships that really fulfilled my life and always the never-ending love and support from my family.  Yes, life is good.

Lately, I've been reading books, researching, meditating and finding TED Talks regarding getting in touch with who I really am, my inner passions & desires and how to be a better person by finding happiness within myself regardless of outside influences and making conscious choices in my life to get to where I want to be.  A lot of the things that have made a big impact on me lately are found in the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  So instead of making resolutions of getting back in race shape, losing a few pounds, training and participating in races, working out a certain number of days per week, etc, I'm going to take a different approach.  Namely:

  • Appreciate my body and its abilities; don't get discouraged comparing it to others or to previous performance abilities.  Be smart and listen to it.  Be patient with recovery and getting back in the groove.
  • Be more kind to others.
  • Don't get angry in traffic.
  • Be slow to judge; don't jump to conclusions or assume something as truth without taking the time to understand where somebody is coming from and getting the full picture. (1)
  • Try to keep a positive attitude.  Especially when things go wrong. (2)
  • Find something every day to be grateful for and write it down.
  • Remember that just because somebody sees something differently than me doesn't mean that they are wrong and I am right. (3)
  • Be more openly honest with people.  Don't be ashamed of my feelings or thoughts.
  • Admit and sincerely apologize when I make mistakes instead of trying to justify them or blame them on outside forces. (4)
  • Ease up on the complaining.
  • Have the courage to step outside my comfort zone in order to grow my character. (5)
  • Connect and re-connect with those I care about; let people know when I'm thinking of them.
  • Remember my priorities and don't let them get compromised.

(1) “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” - Stephen R. Covey

(2) “It's not what happens to us, but our response to what happens to us that hurts us.” ― Stephen R. Covey

(3) “Two people can see the same thing, disagree, and yet both be right. It's not logical; it's psychological.” ― Stephen R. Covey

(4) “It is one thing to make a mistake, and quite another thing not to admit it. People will forgive mistakes, because mistakes are usually of the mind, mistakes of judgment. But people will not easily forgive the mistakes of the heart, the ill intention, the bad motives, the prideful justifying cover-up of the first mistake.” ― Stephen R. Covey

(5) “Courage isn't absence of fear, it is the awareness that something else is important” ― Stephen R. Covey

Some other Stephen Covey quotes that resonated with me (I'm only a little more than halfway through this book!  Seriously, such great stuff):

“Inevitably, anytime we are too vulnerable we feel the need to protect ourselves from further wounds. So we resort to sarcasm, cutting humor, criticism -- anything that will keep from exposing the tenderness within. Each partner tends to wait on the initiative of the other for love, only to be disappointed but also confirmed as to the rightness of the accusations made.”

“...churchgoing is not synonymous with personal spirituality. There are some people who get so busy in church worship and projects that they become insensitive to the pressing human needs that sourround them, contradicting the very precepts they profess to believe deeply.”

“Be patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender; it’s holy ground. There’s no greater investment.”

“Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.”

“Trust is the highest form of human motivation.”

Those last 2 quotes really hit home to me.  I put HUGE value on trust and honesty.  Once lost, it takes a lot to regain.  I WANT to trust people.  Sadly, I've become a cynic and I sometimes expect people to prove to me that I can trust them -- even when they've given me no reason to DISTRUST them.  This is something that I am working on.  I can't let my past rule my future and sabotage all my relationships.  I need to choose to react differently.  Additionally, I need to conduct myself in such a way that people know I am trustworthy.

Anyway, this year, I'm choosing to focus on bettering myself from the inside.  By building and strengthening my relationship with myself, I feel I can offer more to the relationships I have with others.

Three more resolutions:
  1. Commit myself to do well in school.
  2. Commit to building my business.
  3. Commit to staying organized.

"A picture of your night"

Left to Right: Jodi, Nick, Jonathan, Me, Travis

The pumpkin carving party I hosted last night was a success!  7 friends came over and we spent about 4 hours carving pumpkins, laughing, watching movies, eating pumpkin whoopie pies, drinking hot apple cider, sampling different Halloween-themed sodas, baking pumpkin seeds, and just overall enjoying each other's company.

It was really enjoyable for me to watch everybody having such a good time.  I'm not normally one who hosts, but I'm slowly warming to the task, as so far each time has been great fun!

Vision

The past couple of months, I've really been focusing on the future.  On MY future.  This is quite abnormal for me, as I'm usually just a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of person as far as LIFE goes.  Sure, I'll train for races and plan my workout schedules in order to accomplish a physical goal 9-12 months down the road, but I've never expanded this to life in general, and certainly not 5-10 years out.  I've always just thought that life kinda just happens and you have no control over it.

Lately, however, I've been looking at the bigger picture.  I've started to dream and allow myself to think of the possibilities out there that I could go after.

I recently came across this worksheet, which I will be thinking about and filling out this weekend as I ponder my future.  I'm ready to commit myself to do the work required to get to where I want to be and how I want to feel 10 years from now.

Have you thought about your future lately and what goals you have for yourself?  Maybe this will help organize your thoughts.  If you're like me and you've never really given it proper thought, perhaps this will inspire you to get your brain churning!

The balance, of course is to still recognize and be grateful for what you have NOW and not be disappointed that you don't already have what you have outlined as your goal 10 years from now.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.Epicurus

Appreciate and respect the process.  Don't give up.  Keep at it.  Review and remind yourself of why you've made the decisions you have, and keep your goals in mind.  Afterall,
A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.Elbert Hubbard

Current Dreams:

  • Earn my BS in Health, Fitness & Recreation with focus in Kinesiology from GMU.  This will take a long time since I can only take 1 or 2 classes a semester.  But I will persevere.
  • Earn enough profit through my Rodan + Fields business to pay for all of school.
These are 2 dreams that will hopefully lead to my BIGGER life dream which I will keep to myself for now.  :)

To Do

I need to work on this.  Let the past be the past.  Learn from it, but don't let it damage you.  Easier said than done, but worth working on.

Always be true to who you are

Photo Challenge #19
"A picture of something you're excited about"

There are several things right now that are making me excited.  How fun!  I think life is most happy when you have something to be excited for!  :)

I finally scheduled somebody to come tune my piano!  I've had this piano for 2.5 years, as it was given to me by my old condo neighbors when I bought my new place.  I've played it many times, but ended up not being able to stand how out of tune it was.  Plus, it had some sticky keys that needed fixing.  I'm so excited to be able to sit down and play again!  Time to re-awaken that side of my brain. Yay!

My friend Renae is flying in from Seattle in 2 weeks so we can go see Beck together in NYC!  I've wanted to see Beck in concert for years, so I'm super excited to get to go, especially with somebody who is equally as excited to see him.  After our weekend trip to NYC, we'll head down to a beach in NC to spend the rest of the week.  Ahhh, the beach.  How I love it!

My friend and former Team Z-mate, Sarah, is going to race the 70.3 Beach to Battleship course in October. My other friends and former Z-mates Nikki & Michael and I decided that we would drive down to NC to cheer her on.  Then, as we got to talking, we decided to also participate!  So we are registered to race the 70.3 course as a relay team; "Two and a Half Ironmen" (Nikki and Michael completed a Full Ironman last year and I completed a Half).  Nikki will swim 1.2 miles, I will bike 56 miles and Michael will run 13.1 miles.  It'll be a game of "pass the baby", as Nikki and Michael welcomed baby Isla to their lives in March.  We're going to spend a week at a beach house down there after the race.  I'm so excited to hang out with my good friends, race, and enjoy the beach together!  More beach!  YAY!

I applied and got accepted to attend George Mason University!  This is equally terrifying as it is exciting.  Haha.  I'm going to pursue a BS in Health, Fitness, Recreation with a concentration in Kinesiology.  I got accepted to start Fall Semester, which is next month!!  I'm not ready to start that soon, as I need to get financial aid in order, talk to an adviser about what credits have transferred over from my Associates, etc.  So hopefully I can defer until Spring semester, in which case I'll start in January!  Crazy!  Scary!  Exciting!!

You know the doctors who came up with Proactive?  Well, they now have this new line of Multi-Med, Anti-Aging products that they've developed.  They started off selling in high-end department stores like Nordstrom and Macy's and did really well.  However, they found that the reason why they were doing so well was not because of the stores they were in, but because of word-of-mouth.  Because of this, they made a business decision to pull out of retail and offer their products through direct selling.  Each year since that decision, they've tripled their sales.  I'm super excited to say that I am now an Independent Consultant for Rodan + Fields!  This is a company that I can get behind.  They have an incredible reputation already due to the success of Proactive, and have only built on to that to create something bigger and better.  I'm learning more about the products and business and am really looking forward to spreading the word!  This lines up perfectly with my background in aesthetics and my desire to help others feel their best, whether it be through physical fitness, nutritional eating, or their skin.  My brain is getting expanded in many different ways and it is really just exhilarating for me.  To line up this little side business with what I will be studying in school just seems perfect.  The other positive side effect I'm hoping for is that any money I earn through this venture will go towards paying for my tuition.

Visit my site at mleblakemore.myrandf.com and use the Solutions Tool to find out what regimen would work best for you and your skin!  :)

In a nutshell, things in life right now are moving forward in a way that makes me feel hopeful, excited and eager for the future.  It feels so great.  YAY!

Photo Challenge #18
"A picture of something you wish you were better at"

Specifically, Self-Motivation.  I do really great when I have to do something for somebody else.  I don't like to let people down, so I make sure I do whatever it is that I need to for them.  But when it comes to doing things for myself?  I fail a lot.  It's so easy to be lazy!  So easy to just stick with what is comfortable.  But I'm most happy when I'm not lazy and when I get out of my comfort zone.  It's exhilarating and exciting.  So why can't I just make myself do it?  It's certainly something I wish I were better at.  This applies to several different areas in my life:

Exercise
I actually enjoy exercising.  So it baffles me that I lack such self-motivation to do it!  I do really great when I'm on a team or I have a personal trainer.  Because I know there are other people who expect me to do it and are counting on me to show up.  I wish I could afford to stay on my triathlon team.  Man.  They were great motivators.  I got my workout and my social desires filled in one spot.  Every day.  It also helps motivate me when I have a specific race to train for.  Which hasn't happened very much this year due to my knee problems.  Bottom line, I do best exercising when somebody ELSE is holding me accountable.  Workout Buddy, anyone?

Chores
Geez, it feels so good to have a clean, organized house!  So why do I have such a hard time keeping it that way?  I'm not a terribly messy person, but it's so easy for clutter to accumulate and then become overwhelming.  I've actually already tried to bust this cycle up by creating a huge chore chart for myself.  I've been made fun of for it, but it keeps me organized and forces me to do those things that I really don't want to do: like washing out the kitchen garbage or wiping down the shelves in the fridge or cleaning out old food from the cupboards or cleaning the oven.  Some weeks I'm better than others, but at least I look at it every day and guilt-trip myself in to doing something.  :)

Grocery Shopping
I LOATHE grocery shopping.  Hate, hate, hate it.  I hate trying to figure out what I'm going to want to eat in the future and then spending a whole freakin ton of money on something that will disappear in the next day, week or month.  And I get really angry when something has gone bad before I've had a chance to consume it.  I always wait until my fridge and cupboards are completely empty before I go to the grocery store.  And then it's this huge overwhelming task.  I really should go every week.  I should make a menu and cook meals that I can freeze and re-heat.  This would really help with my desire to eat more healthy foods, too.  It's SO EASY to be fat and lazy.  But horribly disappointing.

School
I've never had a desire to go back to school.  Once I moved out to VA and got a job, I thought that was it.  I earned my AAS and then certificates from phlebotomy and esthetics.  Now I just work and earn money.  Not having a Bachelor's degree hasn't held me back in my career.  But eventually over the years, the thought of school actually crossed my mind.  It's interesting living out here.  Meeting new people consists of a resume review instead of a "what are your interests?"  I would feel embarrassed every time I was asked what my alma mater was or where I went for my undergrad - implying that not only should I have an undergrad degree, but also a graduate degree.  But even this constant feeling of inadequacy didn't start that motivation fire in me to do something about it.  I just didn't care THAT much.  However, because of constant encouragement from my friend Michelle I started really giving it a thought over this past year.  And now from the more recent encouragement from my parents and other friends, I'm finally doing something about it.  I've been motivated to go back to school.  To study something that I'm actually interested in learning.  I've applied to George Mason University and hope to get a BS in Health, Fitness, and Recreation Resources with a focus in Kinesiology.  This will take forever since I will still be working full-time.  But I really hope that I will be motivated by my studies and to stretch my brain a bit.  .

"A picture of a person you'd love to trade places with for a day"

Kate Middleton's closet must be a beautiful place
Kate Middleton
I'd like to spend the day wandering through all the places that are off-limits to the regular public, meet all the royals, get briefed on all the charities she's involved with, go through her closet (I love the dress she's wearing in the above photo!), go for a ride with Harry in his helicopter, and be privy to all the behind-the-scenes activities that go on (does she get her hair and make-up done every day?  Does she have a personal trainer?  Does she fix any of her own meals?).

Also, do we get to switch bodies?  Because............  Yeah.............

(except she's pregnant right now and I don't want to be pregnant).

I'm sure Kate would just LOVE a day in the life of me.  Enjoy the office, Kate!  Pay some bills with your money while you're me, would ya?  Cheers.

Goings On

Sometimes my life isn't all boring (but is probably always uninspiring).  Here's a smattering of some fun things I've done over the last few months. Yay Spring!

MAY

5th:  Cinco De Mayo celebration at my place!  We had way too much food, and way too much fun talking about poop while hanging out on my back patio.  I had 4 friends come over, but somehow my only picture was of Travis.

8th:  First baseball game of the season!  We won, but I still didn't catch a fly ball in my glove (I bring it to every baseball game I attend).  Someday!

Our new president on the team, William Howard Taft with Abraham Lincoln
The Cheese
11th: Sweetlife Festival!  My friend Jonathan had an extra free ticket (since the company he works for was one of the sponsors) that he offered to me.  The day started off sunshiney and hot, and then we had a crazy downpour a few hours later and everybody got soaked.  I huddled with a handful of people under a tarp that was supposed to be protecting the ping pong table.  During the downpour, we peaked out from behind the tarp and saw some 15 year old girl vomiting in her lap all soupy-like, then passing out, waking up to vomit again, then passing out again.  This continued for an hour or more.  It was super disgusting, and yet I couldn't NOT look.  We ended up staying to hear all the bands.  The bands who played later in the evening were fun.

Members of the band Passion Pit play some foosball

26th:  Cousin Richard came to visit for Memorial Day weekend.  It was quite chilly this day, but the sun was shining, so we hung out at my pool for a few hours.  I got ROASTED.  Nearly 3 weeks later, I'm finally at the end stages of peeling.  Hopefully.

31st:  Parents fly in for a visit!  Yay!  Since they've been here several times and done all the popular touristy things, I decided to take them down to Old Town Alexandria for a stroll along the river and shops.  The evening weather was just perfect.

JUNE

I took vacation the first week of June to hang out with my parents and my sister's family.  It was great!  We spent a lot of hours playing pinball in the basement.

7 machines. Very loud. Very fun

1st:  Nephew Seth's 8th Birthday!
Basketball cake!
A new basketball hoop for his birthday!  He's a good little shooter
Seth wanted to do a birthday puzzle.  He helped with the border, left for a few hours, then came back in time to put in the few remaining pieces.  :)

2nd:  Soccer: USA vs GER!!  This was so awesome!  Travis was generous enough to give me a ticket to go with him to RFK Stadium to watch the US Men's National Team take on Germany.  Since we had just been to Germany 8 months before, and I LOVE soccer, I was super excited.  It turned out to be the BEST soccer match I've been to.  7 total goals!  And USA took the win, 4-3.  Nevermind that Germany had their 2nd string players on the pitch.  We were just so excited to win.  It was a really fun day in which we tailgated before the game and got our grill on.

Over 47k fans attended

Our on-going excitement on display after the match

4th:  Niece Hannah teaches me how to do a 5-strand braid on her hair, and she does amazing things with mine.

My attempt to conquer the 5-strand french braid on Hannah's hair
Hannah does awesome things with hair

5th:  Nephew Joseph's 5th grade recognition

7th:  Sweet Frog silliness

The fam-damly

8th:  Nephew Seth's baptism
Father & son
Seth with his mom & dad
Vorhauer Family
All the family right before the baptism
Outside after the baptism
